| Established in 1986, the Nassau
Wings spun off of the older Suffolk Wings Motorcycle Club when several members
from Queens and Nassau Counties in New York decided it was too difficult
to travel out to Patchogue to attend regular meetings. The Nassau
Wings is chartered club 5797 with the American Motorcyclist Association
(AMA) and is an active member of AMA Road Riding District 34.
The club boasts two members who completed the AMA
Eagles Academy. It was incorporated as a Not-For-Profit
organization in the State of New York in 1989.
The Nassau Wings Motorcycle Club is a club
open to both men and women, and (despite what many feel the name
implies) to any and all brands of motorcycles. We prefer
experienced riders, though beginners are invited to ride with us on
various runs, and we will work with them till their skill levels are
acceptable to the club as a whole.
The Nassau Wings
hosted
“Pop's
Run”
for the first time in 2001.
Proceeds from “Pop's
Run”
help benefit the
Amyloid
Research
Fund. Amyloidosis is a little known, but very serious
affliction
that killed the father of a very good friend of the Nassau Wings.
The Nassau Wings meet twice a month, on the
second and fourth Wednesdays. We meet at the
Irish Cottage Pub & Restaurant (in the back room),
1010 Park Blvd, Massapequa Park at 8:00 pm. Optionally, arrive at 7:30pm for dinner.
On non-meeting Wednesdays (weather permitting)
we meet at the Stop and Shop Parking lot in Bellmore
at
the corner of Jerusalem Avenue and Newbridge Road for a dinner ride.
Take Southern State Parkway Exit 25 South. Proceed straight
through the traffic light (Jerusalem Avenue) and pull into the
parking lot to your left. We meet at 7:30, and then ride to any of a
variety of restaurants on Long Island.
At least once a month we will participate in an AMA
District 34
Road Event (weather permitting). These are
generally day rides that take place on Sundays, though the popular
Ramapo 500 event is a two-day affair. On other weekends,
members are encouraged to suggest possible destinations or other
non-District 34 events.
The Nassau Wings have a reputation of having
an aggressive riding style. Though we (of course) don't feel
this is true, we do believe the members of our club possess
above-average riding skills. This may be due in no small part to
having five active
MSF
Instructors
in our ranks. Weaker riders have noticed their
own skills improving by riding with the club and discussing riding
techniques with the other members.
Membership requirements are rather minimal, in
keeping with the loose nature of the organization. We encourage those who are interested in our club to meet and ride with us as guests before requesting to be considered as prospects. Prospects are
required to attend two club rides to give the active members a
chance to evaluate their ability to ride in a group. Prospects are
required to attend four meetings. This gives the membership a
chance to see if the prospect's personality is a mesh with the rest
of the club, and it gives the prospect a chance to evaluate the club
as well. After two rides and four meetings, the active membership
will vote on accepting the prospect into our ranks. Although some
clubs reportedly have an additional initiation rite, all we
ask for is the $50.00 club dues up front. Members who join late in
the year will still pay $50.00 for a year, but the next year will
only have to pay $25.00 to renew.
The Nassau Wings publishes a newsletter
twice a month for all active members (and article contributions
are always welcome) and maintains a presence on the
WorldWide Web (you're reading that now). If you are
interested in joining our merry band, return now to the home
page and drop a line to any of our officers who possess an E-Mail
address on the Internet!
